Ontario Clean Air Alliance: Ontarians overwhelmingly say NO to new nuclear and YES to renewables

A survey commissioned by the Ontario Clean Air Alliance (OCAA) (please donate to OCAA) reveals that a significant majority of Ontarians oppose Ontario Power Generation's (OPG) plan to build four new U.S.-designed nuclear reactors at the Darlington Nuclear Station. The primary concern centers on the reactors' reliance on enriched uranium fuel sourced from the United States, raising issues about energy security and dependence on foreign policy decisions.

Green Energy Key Findings:

  • 80% of respondents believe OPG should cancel the nuclear reactor contracts due to their dependence on U.S.-supplied enriched uranium. This isn't just the opinion of Green voters—59% of PC voters favoured cancelling the US-sourced nuclear contracts as well.

  • With wind and solar offering power at less than half the cost of nuclear, 70% of Ontarians want investments redirected to renewables.

The report also includes polls which indicate Ontarians are in favour of an east-west electricity transmission system, and support our utilities (like Hydro Ottawa) providing no-money-down, zero-interest financing for the installation of heat pumps.

Our Cando Reactors and the uranium it uses are the best in the world. It is the only nuclear facilities that does not allow military us of uranium. We assisted the ministry of Jean-Jack Blais sale of 2 reactors to China. We oppose the continued collaboration with the US, the use of their uranium for commercial and geopolitical consideration.
