Hey Ontario residents, did you know you can dramatically reduce your electricity bill?
At an OREC event on November 7th, Darryl McMahon presented an outline of Ontario’s Ultra-Low Overnight (ULO) electricity pricing plan, highlighting its financial and operational advantages, especially for households able to shift usage to low-cost overnight hours.
ULO is framed as a workaround for Ontario’s high-cost nuclear power infrastructure, which operates continuously due to its fixed costs. Key recommendations include shifting electricity usage (e.g., EV charging) to overnight hours for savings, using photovoltaic (PV) systems to capitalize on peak rates, and exploring household battery storage for added financial benefits.
Ontario’s new Ultra-Low Overnight (ULO) pricing provides a unique opportunity. Members can benefit from shifting high-usage activities (like EV charging) to overnight hours when rates drop by 90%, saving hundreds annually. Renewable energy cooperatives, like OREC, can support members by offering advice on using solar PV systems, which generate credits at peak times, and exploring battery storage to maximize energy use during high-cost periods. This model builds resilience and reduces reliance on traditional, costlier grid energy.
